Breastfeeding is both child’s right and parents' responsibility – urged PS Batamuriza Mireille

August 7, 2025 – Breastfeeding is more than a meal for a newborn; it is the first vaccine, the first protection, and the first investment in a child’s future – said Mireille Batamuriza, the Permanent Secretary (PS) in the Ministry of Gender and Family Promotion (MIGEPROF).

She was speaking during the launch of the breast-feeding campaign that is observed under the theme “Invest in Breastfeeding, Invest in the Future”. The campaign features a long-month drive to promote optimal breastfeeding practices across the country. The event took place in Nyagatare district, Matimba sector.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Gender and Family Promotion, Batamuriza highlighted that breastfeeding is more than a nurturing act; it is both a right of every child and a fundamental responsibility of every parent.

“Every child deserves the best start in life, and breastfeeding is a key part of that foundation. Breastfeeding is not only a child’s right but also a parental responsibility, bringing benefits that extend beyond the child to the entire family.” said Batamuriza, adding that it is a shared responsibility, fathers, families, workplaces, and communities must support mothers so they can successfully breastfeed.

She applauded institutions that have introduced workplace breastfeeding rooms, noting these spaces reduce stress for working mothers and improve their productivity. She urged other organizations to follow suit, describing such support systems as an investment that pays off in healthier children and a stronger workforce.

The launch attracted residents, community leaders, and government officials, including Murekatete Juliet, Vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs in Nyagatare District.

The latter official highlighted that breastfeeding also plays a vital role in reducing child stunting. She encouraged men to stand by their wives during breastfeeding, reinforcing the message of shared responsibility.

Throughout the event, parents received guidance on proper breastfeeding practices and its benefits for children, mothers, and the country.

Recognizing its vital role in building a healthy and thriving generation, Rwanda has joined the rest of the world in marking World Breastfeeding Week—a global campaign that champions breastfeeding as a cornerstone of lifelong health and development.
