Business Community Join Hands to Scale Up Nutrition in Rwanda

August 29, 2025 – Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Business Network Rwanda convened a workshop in Kigali bringing together business community, government institutions, and development partners to explore how the private sector can play a stronger role in advancing national nutrition priorities.

The workshop was co-chaired by the National Child Development Agency (NCDA) and the World Food Programme (WFP).

During the meeting, NCDA Deputy Director General Gilbert Munyemana underscored the urgent need to boost the consumption of animal-source foods, which are vital for better nutrition outcomes. He noted that nutrition should not be seen only as a health issue but also as a key driver of economic growth and national development.

“Strong business partnerships are crucial if Rwanda is to achieve its nutrition goals,” he emphasized.

The workshop provided a platform for members of the Scaling Up Nutrition Business Network (SBN) Rwanda to brainstorm on how the network can be more profitable and impactful, while at the same time contributing to the country’s nutrition targets. Discussions focused on strengthening members’ understanding of SBN’s structure, objectives, and operations, clarifying the roles and responsibilities of the Executive Committee, exploring business opportunities within the nutrition sector, and recruiting new members to broaden the network’s reach and influence.

Kaori Ura, the World Food Programme Deputy Country Director highlighted the importance of creating sustainable food systems that address both malnutrition and market opportunities for businesses. They stressed that by integrating nutrition into business models, companies not only contribute to healthier communities but also expand their own markets by meeting the growing demand for nutritious products.

The Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Business Network (SBN) is the world's leading platform for businesses committed to improving nutrition. As part of the SUN Movement, SBN supports the private sector to contribute to national nutrition priorities by integrating nutrition into their business models and operations.

SBN Rwanda was established in late 2022 to engage business and strengthen the private sector's role in advancing national nutrition priorities. The network works to create a supportive ecosystem where businesses can thrive while contributing to improved nutrition outcomes.
