Children’s Day 2024: Parents called on embracing children’s rights

The celebration took place in Kigali and brought together officials from government institutions, development partners, friends of families (Inshuti z’Umuryango), parents and children.

Speaking at the event, the Director General for the National Child Development Agency (NCDA), Ingabire Assumpta reminded parents to embrace child rights as they want to shape them into future responsible citizens.

“What we need to emphasize during the celebration of this international children’s day, is that parents should bear in mind that it requires coordinated efforts for the development of a child, that is why we should accompany them during each step for cognitive development”

“When you hear from street children, you will realise that problems they face are family rooted, where parents are not responsible. We need to re-think of children’s rights, we sing of it, but we are not aware of it. For example, you will see children who are not registered in civil registration” she said.

During the celebration, children took lead in responsibilities from event moderation and entertainment.

Speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Gender and Family Promotion, Mireille Batamuriza reminded children on their responsibilities.

"Children should avoid engaging in inappropriate behaviors influenced by peers and instead, focus on setting and working toward clear goals with a defined vision," she said.

This year’s World Children's Day was celebrated under the theme “Listen to the future. Stand Up for Children's Rights.
