GAIN Rwanda launches six-year nutrition project to combat stunting
The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) Rwanda, in partnership with the Government of Rwanda has launched the Combating Malnutrition in Rwanda through Sustainable Food Systems (CMR-FS) project. The six-year initiative aims to strengthen the country’s nutrition programs and reduce stunting, particularly among children under five years old.
The launch event that was held in the Western Province brought together NCDA Director General Ingabire Assumpta, Western Province Governor Jean Bosco Ntibitura, GAIN Rwanda Country Director Silver Karumba and Dr. Ueli Mauderli from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), alongside district leaders and other partners.
In her remarks, DG Assumpta Ingabire commended GAIN Rwanda for supporting government-led nutrition programs and emphasized the importance of local ownership in achieving sustainable impact. She called on district teams to coordinate effectively and ensure that the project benefits reach the most vulnerable households.
“Strong coordination and accountability at the district level are essential to make every resource count in the fight against malnutrition,” Ingabire said.
The CMR-FS project will be implemented across five districts in the Western Province, namely Rutsiro, Rusizi, Nyamasheke, Nyabihu, and Karongi districts. It focuses on improving access to nutritious foods, enhancing maternal and child nutrition, and strengthening the national food system to ensure long-term sustainability.
Specifically, the project seeks to promote the production and consumption of eggs, iron-rich beans, and fruits, while supporting the National Food Fortification Policy to increase the availability of nutrient-dense foods for mothers and children.
