Jyejuru Kibondo initiative launched to accelerate efforts to combat stunting
The initiative focuses on promoting healthy child development, reducing stunting rates, and improving family well-being in the region.
The launch event that took place in Rugabano Sector, Karongi District, and was attended by different officials, including Kayisire Marie Solange, the State Minister for Local Government; Ingabire Assumpta, the NCDA Director General, Ntibitura Jean Bosco, the Governor of the Western Province, Pauline Okumu, the National Director of World Vision Rwanda among other officials and local residents.
Community members actively participated in community work (Umuganda), where they planted fruit trees and vegetables. The event also included an awareness campaign to combat malnutrition, featuring practical demonstrations such as growth monitoring for children, preparation of nutritious meals, and feeding practices for young children.
Speaking at the launch, DG Assumpta encouraged parents to take their children to regular growth monitoring sessions and ensure they include animal-source foods in their diets. She urged them to start with easily, locally available and affordable animal-source food such as eggs and fish.
The Jyejuru Kibondo initiative employs a community-driven approach to address the root causes of malnutrition through different strategies such as regular growth monitoring, nutrition education and cooking demonstrations, hygiene and sanitation awareness, economic empowerment and development of home-based Early Childhood Development (ECD) among others.
Through the ongoing national campaign, "Hehe n’Igwingira" several initiatives, including Jyejuru Kibondo, are being implemented to accelerate efforts in combating malnutrition towards achieving the National Strategy for Transformation (NST2) target of reducing stunting to 15% by 2029.
