NCDA empowers over 410 youth to shape their future

Over 410 beneficiaries convened for a national retreat for Orphans and other Vulnerable Children (OVC) supported by the National Child Development Agency (NCDA) under the ‘Tubarere Neza’ project, funded by the Global Fund. Held under the theme “I Am the Future,” the retreat marked a significant milestone in preparing young people for life beyond school.

For years, NCDA has invested in empowering OVC to access education and successfully transition into adulthood. As many beneficiaries complete secondary school and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), the focus is now shifting toward equipping them with practical skills, psychosocial support, and employability competencies needed for sustainable socio-economic integration.

Held on March 21, 2026, at the Nkumba Civic Training Center in Burera District, the retreat brought together young people who completed their studies over the past three years. The retreat sessions focused on entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and personal development areas where many graduates face challenges despite having academic qualifications.

“Young people need practical skills to navigate the job market and create their own opportunities. True preparedness requires not only academic knowledge but also mental well-being and professional readiness” said Gilbert Munyemana, NCDA Deputy Director General during the retreat.

For Iradukunda Salomon, who attended the same retreat for the second time, said the retreat strengthened his understanding of how to engage financial institutions and access loans to expand his veterinary practice.

Launched in 2009 under the Ministry of Gender and Family Promotion and later transitioned to NCDA, the Tubarere Neza project has supported over 51,100 children. The program provides comprehensive assistance, including school fees, meals, learning materials, and livelihood support for vulnerable families to ensure that children not only stay in school but also thrive.
