New model ECD inaugurated in Gasabo

September 09, 2026 – The National Child Development Agency (NCDA) joined Imbuto Foundation and Mount Kigali University in launching the newly constructed Early Childhood Development (ECD) center, accommodating over 100 children from the neighborhood.

Located in Kinyinya Sector of Gasabo District, the center was constructed through the partnership between Imbuto Foundation and Mount Kigali University, that seeks to advance early childhood initiatives in Rwanda.

Speaking while officiating the launching event, NCDA Director General, Ingabire Assumpta hailed partners for the commitment adding that, expanding access to quality early childhood development services is a critical investment in Rwanda’s human capital and a key priority for national development.

She reminded parents of their irreplaceable role in parenting, despite modern facilities and services brought by the government and partners. 

“This center will be more beneficial when parents value and own it. To mean that your role should not be limited to bringing your children, but, to contribute to its operation in collaboration with caregivers and local leadership,” she said.

She also reminded parents of their fundamental role in shaping their children’s lives, emphasizing that parental love, the sacrifices they make, and the time they spend playing, talking, and engaging with their children are essential to their healthy growth and development.

Imbuto Foundation Director General, Elodie Shami said the center will empower parents in child-care practices.

“This ECD facility will not only serve as a strategic investment in children, but will also empower parents with the knowledge and skills to care for and protect their children." She said.

The Chairman and Founder of Mount Kigali University, Prof. Simon N. Gicharu said that investing in ECD is the institution’s contribution to the country’s vision.

“This is how we see our contribution to Rwanda’s vision 2050 by investing in human capital, nurturing innovations, strengthening families and creating communities where children have the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive,” he said.

Currently, in Rwanda there are 32,755 ECDs countrywide, among them 374 being model ECDs.
