New teaching approach to train teachers in early childhood education
April 2, 2025 - The Deputy Director General of National Child Development Agency (NCDA), Gilbert Munyemana joined Imanzi City of Mainz School at the opening of the "Fun Learning Campus", a teacher training center, equipping educators with innovative, play-based, and Finland-inspired methods to elevate early childhood education.
The new approach equips educators with playful learning principles that foster them with creativity and holistic development.
Located in Ndera Sector of Gasabo District, the school will train early childhood teachers from different schools around Kigali.
Speaking at the event, DDG Munyemana appreciated the initiative saying that it aligns with NCDA mandate.
He challenged trainees to prepare for using the skills they will acquire, saying that "it's important to learn, but what happens after learning is the most important".
“NCDA is here to support this initiative because it is part of what we are focusing on. In Rwanda, the ECD policy focuses on comprehensive services which has six pillars, though most people focus on early learning because it always goes with other parts like positive parenting whereby teachers (caregivers) interact with parents”, he said.
He said the policy also targeted to improve access to ECD services, to achieve this target; ECDs have been introduced to operate at church, community and in homes which resulted in increased rate of attendance.
